Lyžování a Ukraine
Ukraine has, for non-Ukranians, a surprisingly extensive ski are infrastructure with more than 50 Ukraine ski areas to choose from, most in the Carpathian mountains and most rather small compared to the internationally better known centres in the Alps. However skiers and boarders from countries like Poland, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia, Slovakia and Germany visit these areas for what they consider better skiing than they can find locally, or at least better value.
The bigger centres include Slavsko, 140 kilometers (90 miles) south of Lviv, Slavsko in the west of the country. There are more than a dozen lifts here beneath the scenic Mt Trostian (1235m), the highest in the region, with mostly challenging terrain.
The Ukraine was of course once part of the Soviet Union and the resort of Tysovets, which was host to the Freestyle World Cup in 1991, is a reminder of that era. Located in a military sports training camp and 325 miles South West of Chenobyl with its infamous nuclear power plant, it was once a Soviet ski training base but the ski jumps that Olympic athletes used to train on still stand, but aren't used anymore.
Another of Ukraine's main ski centres, Ivano-Frankivska, is located close to the Romanian border attracting skiers from outside Ukraine’s borders seeking low priced lift tickets again and rate the ski slopes as similar to New England.
